If you’ve been following our blog then you have read English Names which was posted last week. I’ve been sure to take a pen to class and quickly jot down some more names for my loyal readers. Here is an interesting compilation of what Chinese people think English names should be:
- Rainbow
- Happy
- Angel
- Praise
- Creamy (my personal favorite)
- King
- Tin
- Mato
- Fico
- Long-B1
- Sum1
- Man
- Manley
- KK
- Co-co
- Gigi
- Nardo
1 These are probably Chinese names. But they are funny anyway. About 20% of the students I teach use Chinese names as their English name, like “Tung”, “Fong” or “Pui”.
Also, I asked my employer about who actually names these kids. Apparently it depends on the school. But in general, if parents aren’t willing to dole out a name then the teachers do it.

“…and I shall call you Mrs. Creamy..”
hey, just caught up with all the exciting adventures that befall the three of you. Miss you guys mucho!
p.s. does your cell phone have a family share plan, 100 bucks is cheap!lol
And here we were having a hard time finding a name… silly us! How does King Knickerbocker sound? :)
And on the flip side… if you shop at Wholey’s Fish Market in the strip district of Pittsburgh, you’ll find many Asian employees working behind the meat and fish counters. All of them wear name tags, which I assume is a requirement imposed by members of the infamous Wholey family whose twisted (i.e. demeaning) sense of humor is exemplified by gentle men wearing identification badges with names like “Dung” and “Fat.”
Well said, Beth, well said.
